Just Eric and I this morning with Brian coaching. I was super sore and stiff this morning. It was interesting that my squats were passable this morning. Yesterday I could hardly squat at all. I have yet to get a clue on what makes each day so different.
For our warm up we did various Kettlebell walks. These come very easy to me and I just turn into a pack horse.
We worked on thrusters for our skill. I was doing OK on those with just a bar. Although the squatting was marginal I did get down on several of them.
When the WOD went on the board I knew I was in trouble. 20 sit ups is a lot for me and I knew Eric would be able to smash me on those. I do a very slow sit up.
We loaded the bars up to 65 lbs for the thrusters. I can do about 5 without an issue but then I would get tired. I really struggled with these throughout the workout. My upper body form was OK (I think) but there was no getting down for the squat portion of the thruster. My squatter was simply not there.
Toward the end of round 2 I noticed that my left arm was starting to itch. I would scratch it when I could and it got red. As the workout when on my right arm started doing the same thing. At the finish of the WOD I realized that my left arm was covered in Hives along with other parts of my body. The only thing I can come up with is the fact I took a shower about 4:30AM. I normally do not shower before going to Crossfit but I did this morning thinking it would make me feel better and more refreshed. Perhaps it was just dry skin from the morning shower.
Regardless, I was very uncomfortable and got my stuff together to get out and into the truck thinking that the sudden change in air temp might take my mind off the hives.
I made the uncomfortable trip home with the itching seeming to subside a small amount. Once I got into the house and started doing my normal morning routine I became a bit lightheaded and the itching struck again. I took a “Ben-a-drill” to help with the itching.
It all passed finally. I still feel wiped out. The only remaining symptom is my upper lip which is swollen about twice the size. Looks like I had fat injected into it. It seems to be reducing and I expect that soon it will be back to normal and go away as quickly as it came.
Was all this just because of the shower? Did I push too hard this morning? I know that I was worried about throwing up but my stomach never truly reached that point. I have had hives in the past on occasion so this is not something that has never happened to me.
I may not be able to determine the root cause on this incident. Assuming that the swelling in my upper lip subsides I should be ready to go back at it.
You can tell by the times that I was really struggling. Although I understood from the beginning of the WOD that Eric was going to have a better time than me, just based upon the movements, I did not expect to be 6 minutes behind.
In the end I worked hard and got it done so that is about the best I can do, at least for this morning.

The original title of todays workout was “The Chipper” however Brian renamed it “The Hive” in honer of my hive attack.

it’s been cold here today it’s -11 feels like 19. but is too warm up soon. can’t wait. I am so over winter. I will be happy when fall or spring get here. Ya I need to redo my survivor video I missed the part where it was only supposed to be 5 minutes long but Jason is being nice and letting me redo. Yay, your doing awesome with every thing. I feel ya on the hives I had them while pregnant. And now have very itchy dry skin. And am allergic to the soap we use at work. here’s hoping for spring
I hope you are feeling better.. Those hives almost sound like an allergic reaction to something… very strange..like you say you may never know what it is.. the lip is what really throws me, otherwise I was thinking the culprit might have been the shower…
Ahhh, Springtime is around the corner. Nothing like a foot of snow and 8 degree weather with wind! Not so bad for me, but I worry about my Mom slip sliding…
